YPN Member Spotlight

YPN Member Spotlight - Alex Jensen

YPN Member Alex Jensen

This week, during the YPN Membership Drive, we'll be spotlighting YPN member Alex Jensen, who's currently serving as a District 12 legislator in Pierre.

1 - Favorite thing to do in Sioux Falls?
My favorite thing to do in Sioux Falls is to talk to the people. From retirees to high school kids, we have such a diverse population with diverse interests. When talking to our older generations, I have learned so much from their experiences. When talking to kids still in high school, their ability to see everything optimistically makes me excited for the future.

2 - What are you reading right now?
Right now, I'm reading the proposed Governor's Budget. I serve on the Appropriations Committee, and I've been asked by the Speaker of the House to tackle the budget for the next 3 months. We have to look for ways to optimize our taxpayers' dollars, so that is the only thing I'm reading right now!

3- Why did you choose to run for the state legislature?
I ran because someone asked me to. I knew I would bring a different perspective to Pierre, on how a different, younger generation looks at some of the issues being discussed. The main reason I chose to run, however, was that I watched a lot of my friends and peers leave South Dakota to chase their dreams, not realizing that they could achieve those dreams right here in South Dakota and in Sioux Falls, specifically. South Dakota tops the charts in a lot of different areas, and I wanted to help maintain these things for years to come.

4 - What's the best piece of advice you've gotten?
The best piece of advice I've received comes in the form of two questions: how big do you want to dream, and how hard do you want to work to get there?

5 - Why did you join YPN, and how has it helped you?
The main reason I joined YPN was to network with other young professionals. I believe the YPN events are a great way for us to grow and develop our crafts, before we become "not so young" professionals. It's also a great opportunity for people to develop friendships with people who become a part of their network.
